Ahoy There Matey!

My aunt sent us one of the best and most loved gifts to date…a pirate dress-up kit. Oh my goodness. AJ is fully embracing this new lifestyle. He officially calls his sword by its proper term “cutlass” and is not seen without his eye patch. If you want him to do anything promptly, simply speak to him in “Pirate-ese” and call him “Captain Roo-y” and he’ll do it faster than a flag hoisted up the mainstaff! :)For the longest time this poor kid was found wearing Maddie’s princess gear without anything to wear, and slowly but surely he has acquired quite a dress up collection himself…from knight cape, to superhero gear and now pirate gear. How fun its been to watch him start to create his own pret
end world. Here are some pics of my fearsome little pirate crew. Aaaaargh!!!!

Adjusting to Life as a Family of 5…

We’re grateful for everyone’s prayers, gifts, and encouragement during this transition period. And though there have been a few bumps (learning Selah is lactose intollerant… still trying to get this girl to sleep through the night, etc.) we have experienced so much peace and blessing and joy during this time!

Here are some wonderful ways we’ve seen God working:
* Selah loves her sister! She truly saves her biggest and sweetest smiles and coos for Madelyn!
*Maddie returns the love! She tells Selah all the time “When you get big we will be best friends!”
* Mommy is growing in patience and gentleness as she seeks to care for little
ones during the wee hours of the night/morning again!
* AJ hasn’t hurt Selah yet! Actually, though he is sometimes unintentionally rough, he has such love and compassion for his little sister! AJ is the first to want to comfort her when she cries!
* Daddy hasn’t had to do the “7pm Walk around the kitchen” move he did often with Maddie and AJ when they were babies more than once since Selah has been home–she is such a content baby!

* We received TWO grants from adoption grant agencies–what a blessing! This covered almost all of our BIG placement fee!
*We have received so much love and affection from family and friends as we’ve welcomed home Selah. It is amazing to witness this–Selah has been, from the start, accepted and loved and welcomed.

Thank you God for your amazing love and care for our family!

Here are some things we’ve done together as a family of 5:
* I’ve attempted and survived trips to Aldis and Target with just me and the kids. Whew!
* Chick-fil-A! We love going here and were relieved that Selah did so well! She amazes us with how content she is!
* Lots of walks. We sure look like quite a caravan now with one extra child. A double stroller plus a carrier or a wagon plus a single stroller…we get a few more looks now as we round the block!
*The swimming pool! Selah wasn’t too sure about it but she didn’t cry! Sadly, I forgot my camera 😦
* Cabellas! We had such a great time…here are some pics to prove it!

Our Month in Review
I’ve been a pretty crummy blogger lately, so I thought rather than type up a half a dozen posts, I’ll just do a little review of the month right here in pictures…

Yet another reason Ben is such a great daddy!

Maddie and AJ found my old whistle. It took approximately 3 minutes for me to create a new “No whistle-blowing in the House” rule.

The kids love going on our at least weekly “Wawa Walk.” There is a great trail behind a local Wawa that I used to use as a kid, now I take the kids there all the time to walk, run, feed the ducks, and explore.

When I saw this tree I knew it would be perfect for an “Awkward Family Photo” a la the Ross family 🙂

My kids love sugar…

…and then falling in pine needles while being covered in sugar….

Dutch Wonderland…this time with Daddy!
AJ has inherited my affection for “spinny rides”…it hasn’t even started yet! The cried the entire time and then after it was over clapped and yelled “I did it! I’m brave!”

And my very own Mr. Potato Head…I love the things he thinks up 🙂

When Daddy was Away…
This past weekend (plus a few days) Ben was attending the NEXT conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Thank goodness we had a bunch of stuff planned to keep us busy! We still missed “Daddy” but at least we had fun!

Our weekend started by celebrating my grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary! Amazing, huh? Ben and I are excited over our 7 year anniversary coming up but it sounds sooo puny compared to 60 YEARS! WOW! My cousins (minus 1) were there and their kiddos, as well as my sister and her kids, and of course Maddie and AJ, so we had a great time catching up and watching the kids all play together. The next day the little ones all met up at Dutch Wonderland. I hadn’t been there since I was little–and we just had the best time! Some highlights (by the kids):

* the purple dragon (at the castle enterance)
* the crocodile (at the enterance)
* the horsies (the merry-go-round)
* bull dozer ride

* big slide
* flume ride
* roller coaster (Maddie went on her very first roller coaster–with her hands up and screaming the entire time!! SO FUN!)
* (and of course!!) playing with Caroline, James, Brady, and Ryan!

A parade and a play date finished out our time. We had a great time, but boy, was it even better to get “Daddy” back!!!

Maddie, AJ, and Caroline before entering the park

Um, Mom…what do you want us to do here?

Um…and here?
(Isn’t this such a sad picture? Not only do we look totally bizarre, but Ben is missing!)

AJ was beside himself with this pretend horse and buggy!

And here at the bull dozer, though he still asks where the dirt went!

Our Week in Review…also known as Super Long Post

We’ve had a pretty busy week and built lots of fun memories!

It started for me with a visit to see my new mommy friends from college–Becky and Kate and their two adorable kiddos Jack and Caleb. I had such a wonderful time visiting them and it was so neat to see them embracing the newborn stage–acid reflux, sleepless nights and all 🙂 Love you girls, thanks for letting me come and visit!
And I’ve gotta say, so nice to hold a little one who can’t crawl or run away!!

The week started for the kids with a free pass to our local museum from our local library! Yay! I don’t know if libraries do this across the country, but you should totally check and see. We received a free weekly pass to our local museum for two adults and four children over 4. Being that I’m one adult and my kids are under 4, I was able to bring along my sister and her kiddos the one day and Audrey and her kiddos the next day. What fun we had!

Brayden at the “hands on” exhibit in the museum

Highlights (according to the kids):
1. dinosaur bones
2. (fossilized) shark poop

3. (chinese) puppets
4. crocodile skull
5. the talking man (a talking replica of the guy who founded the museum–I thought it was totally creepy but the kids can’t stop talking about him)

I loved looking at the art work and enjoyed a week off from planning preschool lessons!

Another new development in our family this week is that AJ has really gotten a hang of this dress-up imaginary world that Maddie lives in. For awhile, the poor kid would try to put on her dresses and be a princess too, but he finally figured out he can be a prince and knight. So, clad with cape (or armor if he wears it backwards) he dances with his princess or fights dragons. SO FUN! Maddie loves her new playmate and is learning to “let go” when he decides he’s done being a prince.

I had a lovely Mother’s Day again this year, this time we had a cookout with Ben’s parents. I had such a nice time talking with my Mother-in-law and hearing the kids sing me their version of a mother’s day song (happy birthday with changed words!). Maddie even let me wear the pink hawaiin lei (we had a luau theme), so I know that was the sacrifice she made for me on my special day. She has informed me that when its her special day, however, she’ll wear the pink lei and I’ll wear the purple lei 🙂

Then today, our “day off” together as a family. We had such a great time! Today was a “Surprise Day” for the kids, including a local park, Chick fil-A, Target, and dinner on the floor watching Bolt. The kids love surprises and we love surprising them!

Adoption Update

Well, I’m glad to say I think I am becoming a bit more disciplined with my internet usage 🙂 Its been very productive in our little home. But, as I’ve promised to update you on any adoption news, I thought I should send a post out.

We are NOW officially approved and waiting to adopt! HURRAY!

Our home study is complete and approved and we will begin receiving information about potential adoption situations. We will most likely be quiet about potential situations in order to protect the birth family’s privacy as they go about making a very difficult and huge life decision. But believe me, Lord willing, you will know when a new child permanently gets added to our family!!!

Please pray for us as we embark on this new season of waiting. Please pray for discernment as we decide when and what situations our profile should be shown to. Please pray for peace for us as we wait and watch God unfold His plans for our lives and for the life of our baby and their birth family. And please continue to pray for our little one and his or her birth family.

What a joy it is to continue along this journey and we’re grateful to have so many wonderful friends and family members to walk this out along with us!

Here are some new and random pictures of our family..

What we have been doing…
Life has been pretty normal around here lately. Here are a few glimpses of what we have been doing lately.

AJ:
Our little guy has started singing. It is just too cute for his momma to handle! I tried unsuccessfully to load a video of his newest song of choice, “Baby Jesus” also known as “Jesus Loves Me.” Since Christmas, he has only called Jesus, “Baby Jesus.” AJ is also becoming quite a copycat…he repeats nearly everything Maddie says and does…the good, the bad, and the ugly 🙂

This pic of AJ cracks me up. He tried so hard to hold his mask up like Maddie, and this was the best he could do!

Maddie:
Our girlie is getting so grown up. Maddie insists on helping me make all the meals and snacks now, which I love. She loves to do my hair, her hair, and now also Daddy’s hair. She is continuing to love pre-school and is doing very well with our little projects. Recently she made a lion’s mask to represent the first half of March (In like a lion…) and she’s learning the Easter story by making a Resurrection Tree (More on our Easter celebrations later…).

Kelly:
I have been busy completing our profile for the adoption. We recently had our home visit, which went well, and now our social worker is typing up our home study. Once that’s done, our profile can start being shown to potential birth families and we can start applying for loans and grants. Now that our profile is done, I feel like a free woman 🙂

Ben:
Ben had a busy few weeks, especially the last week and a half. While our dear friends, and Sr. Pastor and his wife, traveled to Ethiopia to bring home their new little guy, Ben held down the fort, led a prayer meeting, taught a new members class, and preached two Sunday’s in a row. I think just that small glimpse of the life of a Sr. Pastor gave him a fresh gratitude for the role he typically plays as Pastoral Intern 🙂 I have to say though, as his wife, I think he did a wonderful job. You can listen to his recent sermon’s here under Resources.

An Update and a Video

We just had our 2nd interview in the homestudy process at Bethany a few days ago. Other than rambling at times (me, not Ben!), I think it went well. So, now we are almost done with our homestudy process. Next month we have our last interview–this time in our home, our background checks and finger prints are in, and most of our medical information is completed and sent in, and at the end of the month we have our required educational meeting run by the agency. Once everything is complete, our case worker will write up our homestudy and we will complete our family portfolio. (The portfolio is like a scrapbook that the birth family sees to help in their decision of choosing a family to raise their baby.) Then comes the part of waiting 🙂 Lord willing, we will be officially approved and waiting to be chosen by early April.

God has provided so much grace to us during this time, as well as finances, as many of these little steps along the way include ‘little’ payments or bills! Not only has this begun to stretch us financially, but we have had to think about how open we are to accepting children with different races or backgrounds than ourselves. Through all the little hurdles we’ve crossed in this process, we feel God continuing to affirm that this is indeed His path for us. Perhaps the most “stretching” moment for us, though, occurred after our second interview. Our case worker wanted to prepare us that because we are open to any race or mix of races, we should be prepared for the process to move fast, maybe even as soon as we become approved. Though this thought is exciting to us, we find ourselves in an interesting situation. First, we want to hold her comment loosely, not expecting a child soon and resting completely in the perfect plan God has for us. But yet, somehow prepare our home and family and finances for a child earlier than we expected. So, while I set up the nursery again bit by bit, I remind myself that God’s plan and timing are perfect…even if its a year from now or later that we bring another child into our home.

I’d like to ask you once again to pray for our family as we walk through the next few months. Here are some ways we’d love your prayers:
* That our thoughts, actions, and preparations would be pleasing to the Lord.
* That we would walk through financing the adoption in the way that is faithful. (There are many grants available but cannot be applied for until your homestudy is approved. If we are chosen early, we may not have time to receive these before the “big boy” placement fee is due. )
* That we would rest and trust in the goodness of God.
* And please continue to lift up in prayer the birth family and our baby growing in the birth mother’s womb.

Thank you for your prayers and support–we are grateful for you!

As a reward for reading through this long update, here is a recent video of AJ. This moment made his Daddy very proud 🙂

Happy 2nd Birthday, Anderson Jay!

Today is our dear, sweet A.J.’s second birthday. I truly cannot believe he is 2 already! Every mother believes their children are wonderful, and I am no exception. There is just a special place in my heart for my Roo-y. (That’s our nickname for him, and though we’re not sure why we call him that, it definitely suits him…and poor kid, its here to stay) We’ve had a nice long weekend celebrating his life. Sunday we had a little family party for him, yesterday he had his 2 year pictures taken then lunch at Chuck E. Cheese, and today he had a morning mini-cupcake, wore the “happy birthday hat” (a tradition for each kid, every year, to get their picture taken wearing this big birthday hat), and he will have his favorite dinner tonight–hot dogs and french fries.

I love so much about my little guy, but I think my favorite is the combination of wild child and momma’s boy that I find in him. He’s crazy at times, running, yelling, laughing, getting into all sorts of trouble, and all with a naughty smile on his face. Other moments, he crawls up into my arms, asking “Hold you Mommy?”, pats me on the back, sucks on his thumb, and cuddles to his mommy’s delight. I love this! He is such a precious gift from the Lord!

Happy Birthday, A.J.! Your mommy and daddy and big sister love you very much!

Our new Preschooler!
Yesterday marked an exciting day in our home
–Maddie had her first “day” of school! Okay, okay, kindergarten is actually still two years away (YIKES!) but Maddie has so enjoyed hearing of her friends Emme and Josiah having school that she too wanted to “Do School”! So, Ben and I thought it wouldn’t hurt to start doing some semi-formal preschool lessons with her.

It was so wonderful to go down into the basement and get out all my old teaching supplies, prepare a little “office” for myself, and get things ready. I had such a worshipful moment realizing that God knew I would someday be using these materials for my favorite students of all, my children. Thank you, Lord. So below are some pictures of our first day. We decided to have AJ join along, and though Mommy was the one who did most of his work, he was an eager student and actually sat in his chair the ENTIRE half hour! This is a pretty big deal for him! And Maddie did great–she was so eager, attentive, and did a great job completing her ‘book’. YAY!

Ben had to stop home quick, so we were actually able to get a group shot!

My very well behaved student!

Our first lesson was on colors. After reading the book, she created her own Color Book (idea borrowed from Julie V) by gluing magazine pictures to the corresponding color page
